Unsurprisingly, this Icelandic, Arctic-themed post-rock band is remarkably cold sounding. With this cohesive atmosphere, Arctic Whisperings stands a parka-covered head above the crowd. This short EP wastes no time building its ambience, beginning with the crystalline piano plunks and dense snow-squall e-bow swells of “Khanty”. The EP never quite reaches any triumphant crescendos, but it never needs to, smartly reveling in its distinctive focus on barren soundscapes rather than in obvious heart-wrenching full band eruptions. óvænt lán is an incredibly promising debut, and pushing this atmosphere into full-length proportions could yield remarkable results. Until then, however, it’s a beautiful and concise promise of what’s to come—just a shame it was released at the end of winter.
